About this Piece

The LeRoy Neiman and Janet Byrne Neiman Foundation is pleased to
announce a new collaboration with Darren Romanelli, a.k.a. DRx
Romanelli, one of today’s leading streetwear designers.

The Neiman Foundation has joined with Romanelli to create a series of
bespoke, limited edition caps that merge LeRoy’s colors with
the crisp Frankenstein aesthetic of DRx, which had led Hypebeast to
call Romanelli “the mad scientist of vintage clothing.” Though the
works seen on the sides of the caps are abstracted segments of
paintings, there’s no mistaking their signature Neiman palette, or his
joyful brushstrokes.

The caps were initially created on the occasion of the 2020 Tokyo
Olympics, which have been postponed until 2021, and designed to
celebrate LeRoy’s long association with the games, which will be
honored in the inaugural show of the soon to be opened Olympic Museum
in Colorado Springs. But fashion also played a major role in LeRoy
Neiman’s life, whether he was modeling a swank getup or simply
depicting one. It was through his freelance fashion illustration for
Carson Pirie Scott that LeRoy met Hugh Hefner, who had been doing
copywriting for the department store and would go on to hire LeRoy for
drawings in countless issues of Playboy.

On the occasion of this collaboration, Romanelli has also curated an
online exhibition of some of his favorite Neiman Olympic works, which
you can find here. And each cap will be mailed alongside a vintage
LeRoy Neiman poster from the Neiman Foundation archives.
